Wow, if they are releasing a source code document for a game that isn't a first person shooter and is more or less capable of modular mapping (In other words, smoothing the workflow from max to hammer) then I may consider switching from UDK back to Source, since not only do I have more experience but it gives me a head start in my code.

May is the key word though, there's some things in UDK they updated recently (Such as flash-based UI development and other features) that unless they really streamlined the model importation, I really don't know if it's worth it.

Either way, it's good to see valve updating their game. If the rumor that Icefrog isn't working on this game is true, they probably did this because they already had a modified source engine that was capable of doing this style of game now. (I.E. an rts or rtsrpg like DotA)

Here's one more for you guys, beings the normal & texture compression on that wall was bugging everyone. This one shows the phong lighting on the ground a little better.

Image

In addition to phong lighting, this new world shader can also do texture blending on normal brush surfaces, with the option of doing it per pixel with a 'blend map' or using a gradient.

Anyway, this is the last screenshot I'm going to show in this thread, I don't want to go off topic.

No it's that top-down view like in the trailer. There's a gameplay video out which will show you just how it is. A first person mode would actually be pretty neat but I doubt it would work out well.

Back on topic please. C17, no matter how awesome looking, has no place in this thread.

It's unfortunate we're not getting a full code base update with this release. It looks like the version of the Source Engine Alien Swarm is running on won't be available to modders trying to make Half-Life mods, either.

Still, I'm excited to play it and see all of the engine changes they've done!

I'm not sure that the alien swarm editor is that much different. If you just select to create a new mod, it will probably be like any other FPS game using the source engine, since VDC seems to imply that the Alien Swarm cameras are handled all within valve hammer.

Silly, I know but I'm already thinking up all the mods we/I could make with the new editor, heh. I'm so glad this is open source, even though I'm no programmer.
