For those, like me, having issues connecting to servers, fleyra posted this:

Update: OK I think we know what's happening. We're not filtering listen servers from dedicated servers in the server browser. Whoops. So any server you're trying to connect to is probably behind a firewall, which would cause the black-screen and timeout. In cases when the server is not behind a firewall, but is still a listenserver, it probably doesn't have the bandwidth to handle many players.
That's our current thinking, we'll keep our ears open!
For some it may be a disappointment, but keep in mind that this is what alpha is for really. The netcode tests come first and formost, and UW isn't necessarily the type of company that can afford the pricey testing equipment that other companies can afford.
Once I can get in a game, and can get into games without hassle, I will be streaming it.
