Portal 2: Stephen Merchant as Wheatley

Postby Blink on Wed Aug 25, 2010 8:59 am

A HD version of the gameplay video featuring Stephen Merchant was sent out by Valve yesterday:

An HD version of the Portal 2 Wheatley footage that introduces Stephen Merchant as Wheatley is now available. In addition to introducing Merchant, the footage gives a deeper look into Aperture Science and shows off some of the new rendering effects in the game, which is due for release on Feb 9, 2011 for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC and Mac.

I saw this and I still like the old voice better.

But Portal looks really great and Source I think is chugging along and looks to be keeping up with the times, in my opinion. Source just has a nicer look to it than most engines, but that could just be personal taste.

Either way, can't wait.

Stephen Merchant strikes me as a suprising choice for the role...

That guys voice is so average that Im surprised he got the role. It just sounds like a stereotypical brit in a studio.

They could have at least did some effects to it like the turrets or glados.

Eh, I liked how the old voice made you feel happy, like he was your friend, this one doesn't have as much charisma.

neither of the voices fit the whole aperture-science-synthesized sound that GLaDOS and the turrets use, but yea the old guy had more emotion and such.

then again, he's supposed to robotic.. :P

The original bloke was the guy from Valve's own office, right?

It's the general consensus on YouTube as well. He was...just...so British it was awesome.

I think the old voice did such a better job on creating a vivid contrast between Weatley and Glados.

The friendly nature portrayed by the first VA, to me personally and as people above me mentioned, had so much more of a personality going on.

The new guy indeed sounds just like a typical paid voice actor. Not that being a paid VA is a bad thing, but yeah.

I think this is my first let down of portal 2 ... :(

Urgh it was a very nerdy accent, I would hate to think what foreigners made of it D:

Yeah he sounds incredibly average. I just looked up the actor and was somewhat unsurprised to see he was one of the dullards from the original UK "The Office".

It annoys me how much of a pussy he sounds (pardon my French). He's one of those "whoopsie, oh deary me!" wimps who seems to appear in a lot of British cinema.

I don't like either accent TBH, and the accompanying animation gives the presentation of one of those cheap Pixar rip offs. Sadly nerds will probably froth at mouth and make endless memes from this.

I am amazed... Honestly I could care less which British voice I get...
Its a talking sphere in an awesome game... It will still be awesome no matter which Brit plays the ball of mechanical bits.

I'm interested in the Co-Op campaign,
Like how many maps/How much variation in them/what kind of DLC can we expect from Valve/Anything new in the delivering of VPKs.

But, I guess some people are more picky then me :\
Contact. The EU welcomes the pain free. That's emotional impact.
I actually think limitation is good for creativity. If we had an engine that could do everything, we would be in trouble. It gives us focus. ~~ Randy Lundeen

If I were to choose a compatriot for the work, it'd be someone suited to the role. Definitely a comedian though.

Needs to be a bit bumbling, but quick-witted, sharp and above all full of character.

Which isn't exactly Merchant.

I know it's off topic, but I'm wondering who else would be good for the role.

Oh, and Plague; regarding Hammer and SDK, it's impossible to tell what we'll get, so I don't think about it. This isn't speculation, it's annoyance.
