Hell I'd buy it just because it's by Valve. Well, only if it can actually stand up to the Xbox and Playstation.

It is kind of a surprising rumor though. I always thought Valve would end up making their own OS rather than their own console. Also, why in the hell would it need 8 GB of RAM?

It wouldn't be a console as we know consoles. It would just be a small form factor pc running windows with steam preinstalled.

The i7 sounds suspect. The hyperthreading doesn't benefit gaming very much.

notice how the word "console" scared half the thread, when all it means is prebuilt pcs which would come with a fancy sticker set saying Valve made it and all their games support it blah blah. (we seem to forget consoles are dedicated computers too)

If it looks nice and doesn't cost a lot maybe I'd even pick one up just to hook it up to a tv somewhere else. I'm not holding my breath for a cheap price though.

Who's to say Valve can't run multiple projects either, not to justify their actions but if this rumor is true I doubt the teams working on their games are hindered by a hardware project much at all. (not to mention the fluid nature of Valve would allow members/groups to switch in and out of projects at ease)

If it's what you say it is and is cheaper, then I'll definitely buy it. My PC is getting old...and the specs for this thing so far blow mine away.

Maybe they're keeping modders/developers in mind, hence the 8 gigs of RAM for development software such as 3DS Max and whatnot.

So you're assuming a pc, be it made by Valve or by Superman for that matter, wouldn't get old?
As for Valve making their own OS - now now! That would be something i'd love to see.

No, it would age just as any configuration does, but if it's a significant upgrade from my current setup and isn't pricey, then it's definitely worth buying. The only issue it would pose would be upgrading. If I built my own computer, I could make it "future-proof" so it's able to be upgraded when necessary. Who knows, Valve might make the Steam Box upgradeable. This is, of course, assuming they even decide to make it in the first place.

And yes, a Steam OS that's centered around gaming and game development would most definitely be awesome.

I would assume those specs are just for the prototype unit.

I'd hope that the console would run a valve operating system (only steam really) on a linux base, a few years back valve hired a some linux developers, so I don't think it is so far fetched. They'd need to replace direct X, but it's better than paying microsoft a license fee for everything.

Navigation by controller would mean the console steam would be different aesthetically from PC steam too, which would be interesting.

But I already have an i7, 8gb ram, and an Nvidia gpu.

Sounds kinda silly though. And their controller idea looks bad. Sometimes I just wish they'd focus more on making games and better tools.

I like OpenGL. I would like DirectX more if M$ didn't control it.

With a new generation of idiot boxes getting nearer I suppose a Steam console might be good for PC gamers, but only if it's cheap enough to attract some gamers who've previously been intimidated by the complexity and price of PC gaming.
