Steam and Source coming to Linux

Postby Blink on Wed Apr 25, 2012 12:50 pm

Michael Larabel of Phoronix has been to Valve, spoke to Gabe and seen L4D2 running natively on Linux. Interesting times for Linux fans:

Right now the game they have been working on the most for their Linux client is Left 4 Dead 2. Why L4D2? Basically because it is a stable code-base to do for their initial porting. They have plans to bring their other titles to Linux as well as lobby other game developers using Steam and the Source Engine to bring their games to Linux -- natively. They are not using the Wine library or anything in terms of their native Linux Steam/Source engine work.

Does this mean the (upcoming) SDK tools and games will be ported too ? If that's the case, bye bye Windows! Great news.

Just makes me wonder if they will focus on fixing this stuff up? Once they make this available for everyone that just means support must broaden for a third party added to the list of Operating Systems.

I know some people say support couldn't get much worse, and optimists like me say it could get better. So is it, or is it not?

What do you mean fixing this stuff up?

I think it's great news. I'll be interested to see how it pans out. I'm not a major Linux user, but I can imagine the fragmentation of it could pose a challenge. (The different distros, environments, blah blah whatever.) I'd be surprised if the SDK comes to Linux in particular. Still, once Valve hit Mac it was only time.

Also, I spotted this way before anyone; I found a CSGO Linux folder about a month ago. :D It will make sense for that to be their first 'tri-launch' game.

Yes! Now I can run pure linux on my main computer and wont have to deal with it so much on my laptop :) Really don't care if they decides to not make it opensource.. hopefully this also can attract more coders/artists etc. to build more games and mods ;) I am overwhemled!

Edit: Or well I could when they release it^^ But after reading the article I am very happy that Gabe is not seeing linux just as a platform of potential customers, also that he in the mention of the article, are negative to next windows and such!

Seems unlikely. We haven't seen a newer Hammer build in a long time, but the versions we've seen are still based on MFC, though they could have ported it to Qt or similar. They've said the SDK is coming to Mac, so you never know.

Pretty sure I've seen this too, and its related to the dedicated server.

The SDK I mean. They seem quite intent on making sure it is on every system, but the SDK itself needs work. Maybe they will and it's in a backwards order, but I am not one to make any predictions. Just made me feel like they were putting the cart before the horse goal wise.

Dammit, and now I've moved to UDK, with no linux support. All my tools are linux native, just the game engines aren't.

I think that just as Source started 'dying', it's gonna be revived quite magnificently quite soon; and I don't think anyone will really expect it. Hmm.

Now they are using their OpenGL renderer on two platforms, I would say drop directdraw if the X360 didn't require it.

I don't see that happening anytime soon while the engine is optimized for directx.
