In what may be the most exciting development in our lifetimes, Gabe Newell has confirmed that Valve are developing a new version of the Source engine. The story from Beefjack states:
When asked whether a new version of the Source engine was in development, Newell replied with an empathic “Yeah.”
Exciting stuff. Newell also reportedly confirmed that 'Ricochet 2' is in development, but unfortunately it appears he may have been talking about Half-Life 3.
Nearly every Valve game uses a new version of the Source engine. The differences are just rarely obvious.
Have a question related to modding or something I posted? Something that needs staff attention? I haven't been active lately, but feel free to PM me or message me on Steam(link below)
It's probably not going to be called Source 2, it may be a huge overhaul to the existing code like they did with Gold Source. AND IT'S NOT HALF-LIFE 3 IT'S EPISODE 3!!!

The question was specifically worded to rule out a new iteration of the current engine, so we’re talking a completely new one.

Didn't Gaben himself say that the title has outgrown itself as the 3rd episode and for all intents and purposes is now HL3? Can't be arsed to find that source.
The inspiration as to why I'm here: Adam Foster; Minerva. Great job man.

Even Gabe says Half-Life 3 now. Lets really not start this argument again, it's been done to death. I used to be on the EP3 train for a long time but now I'm just going with HL3, who cares. And for anyone who wants the full video, it's here. Gabe talks about a bunch of other interesting stuff, like working on controller designs, and their internal space pirates game that died (briefly). The audio is absolutely terrible though, their 1080p camera broke on the way there.
Maybe it took them that long to make the engine? You can't work on a game until the engine is done. Also I'd really kind of like Ricochet 2, maybe as a F2P title.
I believe in the Valve Time video Gabe states that Ricochet has "started development".
This doesn't indicate a time-frame but that it is in development, although it hasn't been the entire time.
Contact. The EU welcomes the pain free. That's emotional impact. I actually think limitation is good for creativity. If we had an engine that could do everything, we would be in trouble. It gives us focus. ~~ Randy Lundeen
