Hearing about new engine stuff is always a plus though. :D

No I got this figured out, they are gonna make a editor and SDK that works on their new steam box.

It's only a question of what distro. Probably Ubuntu, as that's what they're working on first and have it already have steam, L4D2, and TF2 working on..

Hey I like this assumption train, let me hop on board!

Hey uh they're probably gonna use a customized Ubuntu distro that is like enhanced for gaming and it will be able to run windows programs and mac programs and andnandandnandjsh;gfhi;fugst;iusga

It is unusual for penguins to migrate but our penguins are a bit different; perhaps it has something to do with the heat?

In any event, the Steam for Linux limited beta began in early November with the initial group taken from respondents to the Steam for Linux beta survey. We are adding more participants on a regular basis so if you haven’t filled out the survey, you can find it here.

In order to support the large interest around the limited beta, we’ve created a new Steam for Linux Hub and “migrated” our information and support over. It offers all the features of a Steam Game Hub, so you’ll be able to keep tabs on Linux announcements, discussions and news. Join the official group and you’ll even see our announcements in your community activity feed.

Future plans for the blog are to be determined but for now you can find all the latest info at the Steam for Linux hub:
http://steamcommunity.com/linux .

See you there!

Boy maybe I'm severely blind but I didn't read anything related to "They're not using windows or their own OS, I thought it was very obvious that it will be linux based.".

Just because you expand on one field doesn't mean you can't expand into another. I think the cool kids call it multi-tasking or something.

I don't know what you're trying to argue, that's just one entry from the blog.

I was merely pointing out that they're working with Ubuntu and have a beta out now. Why would they use windows for their steam box when they have this. If they ever have a "Steam OS" it will probably be heavily based off linux, there's been no talk at all about starting from scratch. It just seemed like a clear business plan to me... it doesn't really seem that far fetched.

Writing an OS isn't easy. Even trying to is either nice for a hobby or a complete waste of time. It isn't cost-effective to do it yourself, not even when valve does it (or 'especially since').

Valve isn't going to write their own OS. More likely they will either use some existing distro (Ubunto) or do something like chromeos (get a naked linux build and write some gui wrapping shit and be done with it). Why do you think theres a few versions of windows, a few of osx, and millions of linux distros? Because everybody who writes his own OS calls it linux? No, because noone is going to reinvent the wheel.
