Play the Half-Life Alpha

Postby Blink on Wed Jan 09, 2013 10:06 am

So amid the fuss of the Half-Life Alpha CD photo that was on Twitter the other day, it seems another person also has a version and has made it available for download:

The instructions for installation floating around are:

To play the alpha delete or renamed the "...\Half-Life 0.52\Half-Life\Opengl32.dll" file and then run "...\Half-Life 0.52\Half-Life\enginegl.exe".

Strictly speaking I'm not sure if this is allowed but pretty much every other HL news site is posting it as well. In the reddit thread the guy writes:

a valve employee messaged me a week ago about it, I told him to check, he never replied so if they don't care then I don't care

You can read more about it in this Reddit thread and even bid on the disc if you wish.

If anyone does get it working then it would be great to see some screenshots!

This is a really cool thing to have. Interesting to look back and you can recognize some of the areas that came to be.

It's also a lot of fun to laugh at because it's total SHIT.

Yeah it is crazy to think of what it turned in to. Remember this was Valve's first game and they went through multiple versions. I wouldn't think Valve would be annoyed about this, its not like its something they were going to release.

Also in theory we could burn out own alphas and sell them on ebay =P

Heh, i've got a pretty interesting video im going to post once its finished uploading. Valve was a brutal brutal company back in the 1998.

It also contains Worldcraft and pretty much all needed to create a map, that's cool. Though, it keeps saying missing d3drm.dll. :(

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7075762/d3drm.dll

I've hosted the .dll for anyone who wants to mess around with the Worldcraft for shits and giggles.

Just download it and put it in "Half-Life 0.52\Half-Life\bin" where the WC.exe is and run it.

So as far as mapping goes, Worldcraft works fine in every sense it seems, however, when you try to compile, it asks for a "prospero" directory.

Someone needs to find out the directory it's asking for to compile the maps into, then we can do a lot of really cool stuff like make shitty maps for a shitty alpha!

From Facepunch

>Copy qbsp2 and rename it to qbsp (root/half-life/bin)
>Create a folder named prospero in your Half-Life folder (root/half-life/prospero)
>Create a map file in Worldcraft and save it inside prospero folder (root/half-life/prospero/maps)
>Compile your map
>Take the compiled map file (.BSP) from prospero folder (root/half-life/prospero/maps) and move it to valve (root/half-life/valve/maps) folder
>You can now run the map

Press 4 then / then 2 then leftclick and it brings the crowbar out.

Whoa, by entering "sizedown" in the console you can make the menu and console smaller and also enable a HUD.
