Well considering all the hype around source and steam on linux, user managed content stores and streamlining the submission process for developers to get their games on steam, I think it's going to be a big steam thing. I also don't believe in HL3 so I don't think it will be that.

If it was source2 then why would a third party developer who doesn't use source care? If it was HL3 then why would valve show it at GDC and expect the word not to get out? That shit would leak for sure, and they did a way better job of releasing portal2 with their ARG. If it was confirmation that steam was about to get a whole lot easier for developers to get their games on the biggest online games distribution platform on the net then I could see them getting excited. Hell, even steam on linux or some sort of auto-native conversion thing (which is what I think valve has in store for steam-on-linux) would generate hype because developers could distribute their games better.

HL3 is like press 'a' to win for net traffic. You mention it and your clicks per page skyrocket. Game sites are just taking advantage of this. Meanwhile, it's not going to happen. Make me eat my hat, valve.

oh god please make me eat my hat

people do people insist to talk about Hl3 like a religion, let's just point out a few things

-Gaben slipped in the name 'Half life 3' in a couple of interviews

-Episodic content was Valves way to deliver quick chunks of the game to the player, but failed considering the time span.. it's only more logical to deliver a fully fleshed out game by now (not to mention they said so them self it was a failed method)

-the name doesn't really matter, it's pretty obvious they wouldn't drop a title like this and there will be a next half life game.. because people want it, people want to work on it (which is important @ valve.. poor l4d1/2 support) and don't forget the major cliff hanger at the end of ep2

now do you really think they will work on a half life game for.. lets say 7 years, and call it Episode 3
I think not

anyway, the rest of your post is plausible

Of course. Valve shows something to the gaming press, the internet creates a vortex of hype, and disappoints themselves.

From ValveTime.net

It was later revealed that Dave Oshry was referring to a partnership between Valve and Interceptor Entertainment to put his upcoming game on Steam. David Goldfarb has also revealed he was also "in on the joke", showing that this whole situation was simply a small plan by a few select small time game developers to generate fake media hype for personal gain, attempting to generate false rumours based around products and companies unrelated to yourself just to gain attention to a Twitter account is extremely unprofessional. Hopefully we believe this whole situation will have actually backfired on the pair, showing the game industry that both individuals are extremely unreliable and childish in regards to gaming news.

I think part of valve's problem is that they *DO* have the "steam" cushion to fall back on financially. they might simply be suffering from a lack of pressure to excel. I know Portal 2 is a contradiction of that, but maybe that is only because they had such a high bar to beat with the original Portal.

It will be the pressure to release the game of the century, don't you think? A bit like with Duke Nukem Forever.

Basically they have to find a good way to continue the story, it has to be looking great - I doubt they'd dare to release it on Source engine ... I mean, not with UE4 and other stuff looking just way better today.

Who knows? There don't seem to be any leaks, either.

You're wrong. Valve would never pull an EA and release something that wouldn't work on computers with set ups from 2005.

People still give a shit about HL3/EP3? It comes when it comes, we've seen countless times already how these small "leaks" and "rumours" have been leading to a dead end with tar pit and feathers thrown to those who thought there might be something.
