World at War Update

Postby Blink on Mon Oct 10, 2005 7:09 pm

The World at War website was updated to show screenshots of one of the maps for their Yugoslavia campaign. World at War is a source mod about an alternate-universe conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States during the 2000's.

The update also mentions their techniques on outdoor mapping and urban mapping -- WaW maps are up to 16x larger in area than normal source maps.

The team behind World at War is the same team that made Firearms for HL1, along with a few fresh faces

You can read the update and view more screenshots at http://www.worldatwarmod.com/

Those screenshots aren't too nice though. The second one looks very fake.

thanks for the comments, Ferret nice to see support from a former contributor :p

This is still WIP, but it's at the stage where we need to get publicity to build up the fanbase and importantly to attract some modelling talent. At the map scale we are working at we rely heavily on props, which take time to get done.

None of our maps will be finished until the modellers finish knocking out props to decorate them so don't judge too harshly yet.

Personally I love playing a source engine mod that doesnt use "canyon" style mapping (aka corridor method) You can go in any direction you want, and define your own route to the objectives. While this isnt a revolutionary idea, it's a new thing for HL based games. Combined with sources superior physics and other benefits over engines such as BF2 uses...... :D

Dont mind me saying, but im slightly dissapointed with the former fire arms team. What i have heard is that they dont like Firearms at all, which i weird. I heard that they said that they wish that firearms would just die.

I really dont like the displacements on the second SS, seems a bit choppy.

Just as a side note this mod is completely false. The sava river's terrain is nowhere near what it really looks like in these maps (I've been around the sava river tonnes of times).

I'm in Aus now, I used to be situated next to the Sava river about 10 years ago, and I doubt it can change like this... doubt it VERY VERY VERY much.

16 times larger than regular maps? Sounds very ambitious to me, even 64 player servers would have little action on maps that size. Also, sort the fog out in the first screenshot.

Read the topic. It lacks realism.

Yes, if they're going to give the exact location of the maps whereabouts. You can't say "I'm going to map the twin towers!" and come out with 2 giant cylinders. It's just not right.
