description
A very important skill, this tutorial takes you through the different aspects of texture alignment.

keywords
texture, textures, align, alignment.

Just a quick tut about a few tools in the Face Edit Sheet. You see them as little buttons that say L, R, B, C, T and Fit.

Image

First, Select a face you want to align, then if you click on:

L = Align to Left
Will move the texture so the left edge of the texture meets the left edge of the face

R = Align to Right
Will move the texture so the right edge of the texture meets the right edge of the face

B = Align to Bottom
Will move the texture so the bottom edge of the texture meets the bottom edge of the face

T = Align to Top
Will move the texture so the top edge of the texture meets the top edge of the face

C = Align to Center
Will move the texture so the center of the texture meets the center of the face

Fit = Stretch and align to fit
Will center the texture and rescale it, so the face is filled with 1 of the texture

Examples:

You'll also notice a little tick-box under these 6 buttons that says "Treat as one". This can be very useful when dealing with a group of faces. If you tick it, Hammer will consider the selected faces to be one face when aliging them, so if you click left, it will align all faces to the left edge of the very left face. Example:

well, that is a much better way anyway (distorting the brushes to the textures). your textures look a lot better if they are scaled to nice decimals

In Unrealed, you can nudge a texture over a few pixels to the left or right (or up or down). Can you do this in Hammer?

OK, I learnt this little trick myself when I was a noob (I was trying to align textures when my finger slipped and I accidentally clicked the right-mouse button instead of the left :lol: ) What it can do for you, is if you are having trouble alligning two textures to each other it will automatically resize and reposition it so that it fits. OK, to start off with, select the texture application tool :textureapp: . It's on the left-hand-side of the screen.

Now Left-click on the face that has the texture aligned properly and then Right-click on the face that you want to align the texture to. You should notice the texture shift to the right position and scale to the correct size. Please note that this doesn't align ALL the surfaces of a brush, just the face you have selected. Repeat until you are happy with all of the faces and compile. Your map will look much more professional and it will also take you alot less time aligning textures.

that just copies the texture doesn't it? It's not the same as "fit" and it doesn't take the highlighted one and line the one you click and line them up...it's just a copy (takes settings of highlighted one and copies them to clicked one) :(

sort of... i copies it, then shifts it the right number of pixels over... so the two brushes will appear 100% aligned, however sometimes if one brush has align to world selected and th other has align to face, then it wont work, simply untick/tick the appropriate box to match the texture aligned properly, and they'll be fine.
