Valve begins hosting mods on Steam

Postby Mr. Happy on Sat Sep 27, 2008 8:11 pm

Valve has always listed mods on Steam, but previously they just linked to the mod's website.
They have now begun hosting a few select mods directly one Steam, giving them download space, automatic downloads, and more.

As a part of our continuing efforts to support the MOD community, we will begin hosting selected MODs directly on Steam starting next week. The first five MODs to ship on steam will be Age of Chivalry, D.I.P.R.I.P., Insurgency, Synergy, and Zombie Panic. As always, owners of any Source game will be able to download and play all of these MODs for free.

Once installed, these MODs will appear in your "My Games" list and will receive automatic updates just like other games on Steam. Also, these MODs now take advantage of Steamworks, which provides stat tracking and tighter integration with the Steam community.

We're excited to see MOD developers get wider recognition for the hard work they have done, and we hope to support more MOD teams in the future. Watch for the official release next week!

I'd love to see this extended to SP mods also, mainly from an Achievement point of view!

ho-oly shit. if that wasnt the biggest incentive to get my mod back in gear. I stopped playing all of these because I never bothered downloading the updates, so this is pretty cool.

it's exactly this kind of thing that keeps PC gaming going and why it's far more important as a platform then any console. This is great work from valve. Genuine care for their community. A lot of publishers shoult take a look at what they're doing right now and consider that punishing their users isn't the way forward

I didn't manage to find a date for when it exactly starts. Seems sweet though, Valve really encourages modders!

I must be the bad apple of the bunch, but none of the mods on there are particularly fun. They're either too laggy, too poorly paced, or overly complicated to make any novice looking from the outside in have any degree of fun. I mean sure, it's wonderful that Valve is giving the mod community such quality and inside support... but it feels wasted.

Hopefully, with the next batch (if there is one) there'll be some singleplayer mods.

The mods they selected are the ones that are played the most at the moment, the most popular ones...

Too bad there are like 4 playable servers on Synergy. But Zombie Panic: Source is really fun! :-D

Zombie Panics almost there, but there are still many flaws. Not really their falt, the engine seems to be less modder friendly than it's predecessor but it still is quite a great engine for modding.
