Does valve do this for their tf2 maps? I was wondering if I should do this for my tf2 map and I dont know if that fits the tf2 style.

Has this method been tested for Day of Defeat Source?

This is a good tut :) word to the wise though - pick your areas wisely and don't overuse the effect otherwise you will end up with lots of faces with high detailed light maps which will not only effect your frame rate in game but also increase the size of the BSP file considerably. I find subtlety is the key when doing lighting so make sure you pick props and areas that are not overtly complex. Usually feature areas are best for this or areas your players will be in alot. Otherwise you will end up with a map that is 300+ MB that no one can play due to frame rate issues :)
Kind Regards,

Yes, valve always use this for anything made with the orange box engine or newer. I wrote up a tutorial on this a little under a year ago at TF2maps.net - http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=2994

I also wrote up a bit about -staticproplighting in the same thread - http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=2994&page=3

-staticproplighting turns this:

I can't get this to work. I have gone through the tutorial 3 times and still nothing. My map is just fullbright. And the compiler jumps over vrad. What the fuck's up?

You screwed up your map? Check for leaks and other problems that would cause issues.

Is there a way to make this work for textures with alpha channels without a model?
