Speed Challenge 26 - Lush

Postby RawMeat3000 on Fri Sep 11, 2009 1:03 pm

In this thread, there will be plants. Unless you've got some other interpretation of the theme "Lush". Maybe a forest of pubic hair. I dunno.

Just to give ideas, when I think of this theme I picture a forest around a cabin, or a park, an orchard. Maybe something more tropical. The main idea of the theme is to get you familiar with making plants, and to leave a nice model or two on your hard drive for some time in the future, where you will inevitably need it.

Texturing is of course allowed, since a lot of plant life is just a bunch of flat planes with transparency. Without textures, you'd get something like this

thanks to gamasutra.com for those

Don't be afraid to go over 2 hours if you have to, by the way. Since texturing is allowed, it's understandable that you may need more time.

This challenge will end on Sunday the 11th at midnight, Pacific Standard Time. GMT would be around 7am Monday. For more time zones, see here.

Not really a speed challenge without a time limit.

If you want to model a pub or a table full of cups and shot glasses, then feel free. You can get away with modeling anything you can explain. And before now I'd never even heard of people using lush like that. I'm shocked and appalled.

By the way, this is me 2 hours 10 minutes in, with 10,540 tris. I need to keep working on it.

Raw, just throwing an idea out: What if you made 2 separate modeling challenges? One that's un-textured, 2hour time limit, and another that's a full week to work on (same idea as a map-battle,) and can be textured BUT has a tri limit or something? You could alternate 'em, so that one week's Speed Modeling, the next is Tri's and Texture.

I like your idea, TicTac. Actually I like it a lot. Because 2 hours is most definitely not enough time to texture. Not even if you're using materials, I'm just finding out. And making it so that people can spend more than 2 hours defeats the purpose of a speed challenge, as people have already said. But I've always loved the idea of an extended, week-long challenge, especially one that let's you take a model from the last battle and use it anyway you want.

I'll definitely think about starting a poly limit/textured kind of thing next week.

:D Glad you like my idea, raw! I'd love to see some of these scene-type challenges, especially now that I'm trying to learn Blender :P

I think I'll try this one out, I really need to start modeling more and I have an idea for this.

Also I like the idea of having a week to model out a scene using a model from a speed challenge. Say you'd have the speed challenge with a space ship (One of the previous battles), then the scene challenge you have a week to make a scene based around that model, so for the space ship example you could make either some alien docking ship with your model on it or the ship attacking Earth.

I'm probably done with this. Worked on it two and a half hours today, bringing me to a grand total of 4 hours 40 minutes and 18.490 triangles.

If it's over 1Mb it will be reduced. Maybe that's your problem.
