OKAY THEN.

I actually quite liked Mr.Chop's idea from earlier though I do understand the implications with possible cost and such.

On the other hand, I would expect that if people are mapping for HL2, most of them are quite likely to be able to run it to some degree. So, from this, maybe you could consider a map battle that had a focus on gameplay first and aesthetics second. Single player, or multiplayer.

Then again, while typing that and having a think, you are most definitely right Major. This would simply take too much time. /sigh

Everything sounds good on paper, and then you have to go and think about it :(

I've never really managed to get something playable and released (Except for some lan maps for CSS...) so I'd be interested to join in on a contest where you have to stay within certain boundaries of dimensions, yes.

How about a multi step contest?

The whole scope would be creating a whole playable map. First contest would be a design contest. Second would be a layout contest, then a simple geometry contest and so on?

That sounds like a great plan IMO. That way, we can get a gameplay challenge AND be able to demonstrate the mapping process to newcomers.

And people will be playing these levels that could have interloper ads "INTERLOPER CONTEST WINNER" ;)

Perhaps somebody could model a plaque with something like this on the plate:

Could have some screws in the sides as well, so that we can stick it on the walls of our winning map, haha :D

Problem I see with a 'gameplay' map contest is the timeframe. Getting gameplay just right is a lot more timeconsuming than making a level look good. Worse, both go hand in hand, no matter how good the gameplay is, immersion is ruined if the level is fugly.

I like the idea, but imo it should run as seperate series of battles with a longer deadline.

Furthermore, based on just the HL2:OB engine? how many possibilities are there? In what factor is some serious coding needed to come up with really original gameplay concepts?

There's always been talk about an Interlopers wide map creation; could have running battles for coding, design, level work and so on, so only the best work on it.

But in any case the whole 'Gameplay Battle' is a pipe dream at the moment.

Course, if anyone wants to start one, go right ahead, I'll join in.

(static, I think gameplay is generally being referred to as how the map plays as oppose to creating original concepts, which is for nutters like coder and z@c. Rest of your argument is good stuff.)
