It's generally accepted in the UK that you need to either know the background or assume it's present.

We don't like having everything placed in front of us; do we really need to know the reason he uses Palladium and why it's decaying during the movie? No. The comic covers it.

Same with Watchmen. Plot holes are covered in the comic.

If it was a sequel to the comic books (however that's supposed to work), I would agree.

However, movies are stand-alone and in themselves shouldn't really contain plot-holes. Imo...
