Portal 2 Authoring Tools Beta Released

Postby ad_hominem on Wed May 11, 2011 10:25 am

Valve have just given word that the official Portal 2 Authoring Tools have been released (albeit in Beta form) for anyone who owns the game to download.

Today we're opening up the beta of the Portal 2 Authoring Tools to everyone! It's available as a free download for all owners of the PC version of Portal 2 and can be found under the "Tools" tab in Steam.

The Portal 2 Authoring Tools include versions of the same tools we used to make Portal 2. They'll allow you to create your own singleplayer and co-op maps, new character skins, 3D models, sound effects, and music.

Here's what's included:
- Updated version of Hammer, the Source level editor
- Updated Faceposer
- Example maps and instances to help build new maps
- Updated suite of command-line compiling utilities

You can read more about the release on the official Portal site, or head to your Steam tools list to download it right away.

I downloaded it but cannot get it to run, the little loading window thats consistent with most steam software will pop up, but than instantly disappear, nothing will happen after after that.

Anyone else having this issue?

That happens to me sometimes with all steam games/programs. Restarting steam seems to fix it (also check your task manager for any extra processes of steam, hammer, sdk, whatever).

I love how they prioritize their updates to hammer. We got new cordon stuff, a radius button, and hammer is now slightly blue. Best upgrade ever.

But damn there's alot of instances.
And whoever pendleton is needs to learn to make good brushes.

What does Valve use to make their maps? I kinda doubt it's the version of hammer we're using...

My editor won't start either. Just the classic "Launching" box pops up for few seconds and the goes away. Tried reinstalling and rebooting Steam, and neither did the trick. This is getting frustrating because I waited all day to get working on some evil puzzles. :C

They use the same hammer as us, though theirs is SLIGHTY upgraded with perforce integration and foundry.

And it their tools runs without steam ofc. :)

Been working on a map (although I've been working on before the SDK was out). I should have a video later tonight or tomorrow.

And by weirdly, I mean not working at all
