Postby Blink on Fri Jun 10, 2011 5:54 am

Quite a scoop for the guys over at Podcast 17, an interview with the Valve big wig himself, Gabe Newell:

We've done it, we finally sat down and talked with Gabe. Glenn and I are pleased to announce that we got a chance to speak with Gabe Newell and Kutta from Valve Software.

Topics Discussed (but not limited to):

o No new Episode Three information, but we try!!!
o Steam as a social platform.
o Steam for mobile devices.
o Source SDK and Portal 2 Authoring Tools
o DirectX 9, 10, 11
o Will GoldSource be released under GPL
o Portal 2 ARG
o Valve’s first steps into a non-fps genre.
o Ideas and backstory behind the Crowbar.
o What Gabe and Kutta do in their free time (besides knives)

Be sure to give it a listen!

No he isn't. He's cohosted a few of the regular podcasts now and been in a few of the PlanetPhillip roundtables but he's not a part of this interview. It is just William and Glenn.

Good podcast. Kutta sounds really young, and shame on you for mispronouncing his name repeatedly :P

Would have been nice to hear a few more curveball questions - the ones you asked were all a bit pedestrian, but I enjoyed listening none-the-less.

Ironically right after talking about Steam as a social platform, you can now link your Steam account with Facebook.

Well, at least it's optional, technically. I don't particularly like the increase in available friend slots for people who do that (it increases to 300),just because it's a bias, although I think the only people with such a ridiculous number of potential friends on steam are dedicated users of Facebook and the like anyway. I have 30 or something, only a few who I talk to regularly, and I don't see why you'd want so many. I suppose that any smart developer would realise the value of such a deal and take it, though, so I don't think this means Valve is being particularly evil-- not necessarily what I'd like to see from them either, but business must go on I suppose.
As long as they don't go Google and force account linking to anything (except for security reasons, say, with email verification; and I think steam guard was a great idea), I won't have to personally strangle the entirety of Valve.

Just... for clarification, I wasn't trying to say it was a bad thing. Just a thing.

I don't have time to search through the whole audio file to find what was said about GoldSource being released under GPL. What was mentioned about that? I doubt that would ever happen but if it did, it would awesome.

It was simply asked if they would ever open source it. (they never talked about if it would be released under GPL or any other license)

They said they could and would like too but they don't want to run the risk of giving people the tools to make malicious actions easier.
Imo they could just open source parts of the engine and leave out security related portions to limit it, but there is always gonna be issues when you open source an engine still used in games.
Contact. The EU welcomes the pain free. That's emotional impact.
I actually think limitation is good for creativity. If we had an engine that could do everything, we would be in trouble. It gives us focus. ~~ Randy Lundeen
