Would be interesting if a developer didn't need to pay for a commercial licence to release a free-to-play game using Source.

well maybe that will be possible considering (as far as I know) they don't make much money with the source engine license anyway

Maybe they don't need to sell the (old) source engine anymore because they made a new engine with all the enhanced tools they prommised.
For whatever reason they're doing this, it's very welcome for the modding community and possibly could increase playerbase for some mods.

Gabe says that right now a large chunk of the company is working on fixing their tools, the number of people working on it is comparable (or larger) than the number people that work on a game at any given point.

LOL, that's a good one!

but seriously though, I hope that this move forces them to finally support their dev tools.
i had fun once, and it was awful.

Not sure what my feelings would be if that happened.

That doesnt say a lot - Valve typically have a lot of small teams working on different projects simultaneously. That said, its great to see they're finally investing in the SDK tools. About 8 years too late, but still...

Yeah I'm getting real tired of Hammer randomly crashing for no apparent reason. It'd be nice to use a more stable Hammer.

This is relevant (I think).
If i made a mod that used AS or 2006 (Or both), is there away to auto install them if the player doesn't heve them? (As they are both free)

Gary, i would also feel betrayed if they cut out the code. We've been waiting long enough for 2009 as it is.... :(
That's what she said.

It would be nice not having to use Hammer, but something that actually was made from scratch. I'm hoping they'll switch from MFC for the sake of porting the tools to other platforms.

Gabe said back in February or so that they were working heavily on the tools and suddenly we're in July now :|

I do believe its close to being released though. Mike Durand have been testing out the different builds from time to time, and the Wiki overhaul suggests its coming. But It'll be a big disappointment. It'll just be Hammer with some shitty features. They should make a completely new tool - for their own sake.
