Figured I should mention this. It applies to anyone in all honesty, but specifically to people in the US stuck with greedy fuckin ISPs.

You can potentially boost your connection by signing up for a virtual private network. A lot of the ISPs in the US are throttling Netflix and Youtube, and a VPN totally bypasses this issue by "allowing you to enter through a backdoor" so to speak. VPNs are usually pretty inexpensive, too.

Oh, and most importantly, it totally masks your web browsing by giving you an anonymous IP Address. Everything is essentially encypted packets. So your ISP can't track everything you do. NOICE!

Doesn't that shit also blow up your latency?

Got 100/100 Fibre here at home.
No fancy speedtest, just a 100MB file test up & down to my VPS in Amsterdam:

Code: Select all

904@maestro: /tmp # dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/bigfile bs=1M count=100
100+0 records in
100+0 records out
104857600 bytes (105 MB) copied, 0.531132 s, 197 MB/s
904@maestro: /tmp # scp bigfile bartb.net:/tmp bigfile 100% 100MB 9.1MB/s 00:11
904@maestro: /tmp # scp bartb.net:/tmp/bigfile . bigfile 100% 100MB 10.0MB/s 00:10
904@maestro: /tmp #
For a decent price (about EUR 65/ USD 90), including phone service and a basic TV package (which is all I need).
I like the fact that it's symmetric, makes pushing data around much easier.
