The future of Unreal Tournament begins today

Postby Blink on Fri May 09, 2014 10:24 am

Epic are building the next UT out in the open with the ability for anyone to contribute. Could be very interesting for anyone wanting to flex their UE skills:

* We’ve created a small team of UT veterans that are beginning work on the project starting today.
* From the very first line of code, the very first art created and design decision made, development will happen in the open, as a collaboration between Epic, UT fans and UE4 developers. We’ll be using forums for discussion, and Twitch streams for regular updates.
* If you are a fan and you want to participate, create a free account and join the forum discussion.
* All code and content will be available live to UE4 developers on GitHub.
* The game will be true to its roots as a competitive FPS.
* Development will be focused on Windows, Mac and Linux

I wonder if they will handle the official maps or are they FFA as well.

I think this is a great thing they're doing. UE4 is pretty awesome so this only good news for the community. Tons of free content for modders, and UT4 built for the fans. Even if arena shooters don't make a huge comeback or if UT4 just ends up ok, its still very interesting and I can see it sparking a new modding community that will last for some time. Epic has been making a lot of good moves lately, its like they're becoming the new Valve.

If UT4 ends up being on par with UT3, I'll still be happy. UT3 didn't do well, but I still fucking love it to death. To this day I will randomly load it up and fight against bots in some TDM. I never understood why it died out so quickly. I guess the bigger games like CoD and Battlefield were too successful for it.

Maybe Interlopers should shift to being just game development and less focus on Source huh?

Not a huge UT player but the community was pretty large back in the day. This could be awesome if organized right. Unreal 4 could produce some fantastic looking levels.... I'll keep my eye on the progress...

I wish unreal engine had better bsp tools, something is seriously wrong when you can block out faster in 3ds max than unreal editor

update:
source engine is not obsolete yet, you can export all your source maps into UE4 without problems, simply you gotta export map from hammer into DXF file, import it into 3ds max or other compatible program, work on map as you normally would (UV maps, colisions etc.) then export it as FBX and have exporter rescale your model into centimeters (program units may affect this, not tested it yet).
when things are moved this way scale barely differs between source and unreal engine, but then again, its probably camera that needs changing.

so yeah, If you want to block things out for UE4 and not commit suicide at the same time, do it in source engine.

The bsp tools are pretty good once you learn them. If you're blocking items for scale a block shape is pretty much all you need...

if I am making items for scale, I dont need a block, blocking out is required for architecture, but thank god I can port bsp from source, its much faster to work with

Agreed. Even UT3's levels still look damn good today. I can't wait to see how sexy UT4 looks.
