Database issue

Postby Blink on Wed Aug 31, 2016 5:14 pm

I'm really embarrassed to admit that when trying to backup the database from the forum I in fact restored an old copy by accident. Two years old to precise.

To add insult to injury the daily backups that I presumed had been running all this time (since switching to a new server) have in fact not been running. I've spoken to the host and there is nothing that can be done. The site is run on a dedicated plan so it's not their responsibility.

I know the forums have been quieter over the last few years so no major site content has gone missing but I appreciate two years of posts is still a lot. Rest assured I feel incredibly stupid to have made such a newbie error.

I'm really sorry

If posts are needed there should be some of the recent ones on the web archive - https://web.archive.org/web/20160325064658/http://www.interlopers.net/forum/

Mistakes happen, I don't blame you, but two years is still a lot. You host this site for free of charge, so I don't think anyone else here will blame you either. In fact, this incident has probably affected you a lot more than anyone else here. Regardless, several help topics have been lost. I couldn't find any mirrored posts on archive.org either, so it would seem that this information has been lost for good.

No need to apologize further though, the best thing you can do for now onwards is to make sure that frequent backups are made and that multiple versions are stored, so something like this is a lot less likely to happen again. What matters is not so much that you made a critical error, but that you learn from the error and are willing to make the appropriate adjustments in response to it. Even though this data loss will probably lead to a hit in the morale on this site, this domain is still a popular hub for developers and as such will still be sought out for by people in need of assistance.

Although, I would recommend that you change your signature to something less profane, not a complaint, just a suggestion.

A combination of bad luck and my own incompetence. I feel terrible, rest assured.

And yes, that signature came back

Simon, how could you

I can't believe you've done this

Edit: For what it's worth, the web archive cached a lot of posts.

Would you be open to artificially generate threads and posts using archive.org as a source? I could write a script that crawls their latest capture.

Edit: nvm - seems that archive.org doesnt actually save *everything* so it would be highly inaccurate.

Somewhat dramatic - bad loss tho, shit happens.
You click on Build or type
make (or some equivalent), and you are astonished, then mortified, as you realize that the whole world is being
recompiled and relinked!
