Useable Cranes

Right, here is my tutorial on how to make a super fun crane, just like the one in the coast map, anyways, on with the show!

Step One: Setting Up Hammer

First off, the crane model is huge, and makes looking through the 3D view quite a pain in the arse, so what i suggest is that if you intend to have a crane on your map, only add it at the very end when everything else has been tweaked.
As for setting up, simply make a large area and add a prop_static and use the model as models/Cranes/crane_frame.mdl, this will be the base for your crane

Step Two: Creating the crane

now we have our crane base, it is time to create our controllable control room, create a prop_vehicle_crane and set the world model to models/Cranes/crane_docks.mdl, also change the vehicle script file to scripts/vehicles/crane.txt, finally set the magnet entity name to "magnetdave" ill cover this later.

Step Three: Creating the magnet

Its time to make the phys_magnet entity, create that and put it just under the crane arm. By putting this to close to the ground it won’t work and will bounce around the map randomly, so keep it close to the crane arm!!
Next open its properties and name it cranemagnet and change Mass Scale to 20000. Now go to World model and choose your Model. I used (models/props_wasteland/cranemagnet01a.mdl). Finally, name it magnetdave

Step Four: Finishing Up

now the end of a crane on a base can be one of the fiddiliest, it involves precise positioning, you need to create a walkway around the side of your base and a ladder to get up too it, once this is done chuck a few barrels and whatnots into your map and compile away, have fun soldier!
