Programming IDE's ? 3D Art packages? 2D Art packages? Sculpting packages? Sound editing packages? Yeah. Basically everybody who makes mods pirates software. There are extremely few exceptions and they tend to be people who aren't very good at what they do anyway.

OMG... I think your judging others by your own standards...

Paint.net / Gimp
Audacity
Blender

All are open source alternatives and commonly used my modders these days...

also, programming in visual studio express is COMPLETELY FREE, and is basically the only way to code for sauce anyway.
Though i agree modders probably pirate more than average, saying there are extremely few exceptions is a little short-sighted.

How many mods have you seriously worked on where people used GIMP or Blender or Paint.net or any other free / open-source solution like that? Because for me, its about zero.

People can choose to steal software or not. There are perfectly acceptable alternatives out there. Not really the point is it.
Modding doesnt automatically mean theft of software.

Getting back to my overall point. When you compare EA to the likes of Valve of Blizzard they appear very weak indeed with regard to what they give back to their customer base.

There is a better way and they actively choose not to follow it.

this. just because they are within their right to ban people from their games, they just shouldnt. I just disagree with the EULA.

It's unethical but ... what power do you as a consumer have to fight against their unethical practices OTHER than refusing to buy their games - which directly damages studios of talented developers and can threaten the jobs of hundreds of innocent people?

I've refused to buy an Activision published game for the last 2 years, I don't see that changing any time soon. However, I don't think that EA has crossed that line yet.

It doesn't automatically mean it, no. People just do in the vast majority of cases.

it kind of loops back to the idea of Steam one day shutting down and leaving its millions of players hanging.

i know gabe said they have tested scenarios where that takes place but ... have they really?

Steam could do the same, but not for the same reasons, only if You'd break the SSA.

I don't think they'd take it so seriously if I'd call them the Devil on the Steam Forums.

I guess the mods really love to suck up to EA there, and you don't have to link your account on the Steam Forums ... thank god.
