I would think an instance of the mod running in Hammer or something along those lines might be better.

I really like how the UDK approximates lightmapping, so you get an idea of the final lighting. Unlike Source, where you got to wait ten minutes to see if you screwed up the lighting/shadows.

yeah or have to recompile because you forgot to turn on some user visgroups for your gameplay objectives
