However, I could only find that one picture of the place, so I had little for reference. I ended up dropping the map and moving on to something different. If you ask me, that would make an amazingly good CSS map.

Hey nub! I've been to that place: It's the "Gaylord Texan" (yes that's really what the place is called), Here's a relevant google image search to help get you started looking for more images: Google Gaylord texan image results.

Every so often they'll host QuakeCon there see website. It's a pretty awesome place in there. It would definitely be a cool place for a map, that's for sure. I hope this helps.

Unfortunately, combinational logic circuits, karnaugh maps and boolean expressions have consumed the past 3 days of my life, but hopefully I can make a start at this soon!

I'm thinking going for some gothic architecture. Mmm. Tasty.

I'm thinking of trying this (first map battle I've ever entered). My main concern right now is whether or not my geometry is going to get too complex and whether or no the map will be too symmetrical. Here's what I've got so far:

This was mostly inspired by my art history class, and I think I like where it's going so far...

Wow, hoops. That looks pretty nice so far! The geometry doesn't seem too complex to me really, maybe get round to making the pillars and archways func_details if you're worried about stressing a system out?

Thanks! Yeah, depending on how complex the rest of the map gets there are definitely going to be some func_details.

I'm wondering, seeing as this is stage one and the winning vmfs will play a part in a stage 2 gameplay battle, is there anything we should take into account?

new WIPS

Image
In the front is the impluvium with waterplants. There are also gutters alongside the windows. More to the left of this image is one of the 3 main floor entrances to the atrium.

Image
On the left of this image the dev texture is blocking of the entrance (it has to stop somewhere) so entering the atrium via this hallway you'll have the glass wall to your right-hand side.

Image
The last entrance to the atrium. Also one of the flyovers that leads to [your gameplay here?]

At the moment no, just make it pretty ;). With that said, seeing that people apparently go out of their way to create complex geometry, it would be nice if they kept a bit of optimization/sizing in mind. If it turns out waaay too crazy, I might need to adjust the goals/requirements for stage 2. But it's all one big experiment. Let's just wait and see. Have fun with this part.

Damn magoc, that's a contest-ending WIP if I ever saw one. I assume a lot of the textures/models are custom?

Actually, it's all standard. Even the 6 (wood, metal, concrete, water, glass and tools/black) textures are standard. :)
