Map Battle 8: Caves

Postby Blink on Tue Jan 31, 2006 12:16 am

For the 8th battle you will be required to re-create a cave environment. This will test your displacement skills but at the same time your abilty to come up with an original and eye-pleasing theme. Anyone can make a brown indorr area, but it's up to you to take it to the next level. I've grabbed some photos that might spark some ideas:

From looking there you can see many types of cave, and a real chance to use Source to it's potential

Now for a few guidelines:

- Your map must have a cave(s) in it, and the scave has to be the main piece of the map

- You can only post 3 screenshots, and you can only submit one map.

- When posting your screenshots, always explain if they are final or still WIP

- Additional mods like bloom mod and garrys's mod CAN'T be used, only HL2, HL2DM and CS:S are allowed

- You can't use any extra software (like photoshop for example) to enhance your screenhosts. Of course usual changes like resizing, croping, or adding your name on the images are allowed

- You can use whatever custom content you want

- The maps are judged according to their quality, so make them look the best you can

- The maps don't need to be playable

- Avoid posting your pictures with big resolutions, since I'll have to resize them later, and they will loose some quality

There are many styles of caves, the more original you can be the better chance you have of impressing

The battle ends at the 14th of February, midnight GMT.

Good luck with this one, hope there are more entries!

This is the first map battle with heavy displacements all over the map so it should be fun.

Im not going to participate but I would like to see a map that looks a lot like FarCry (beaches, mountains, waterfalls, sun, boulders) All these maps should look good when their finished.

OH NOES!

*Backs away from the battle*

This is not my cup of tea.
If anyone has any links to a cavetype displacement tutorial, it would be very appreciated.

(I only know how to make the ground uneven :? )

I'm going to check the Tutorials subforum now.

I made a map like this a LONG time ago, not doing it again, I had major issues with the map.

Hrmh.... I learnt texture creation for the last map battle, maybe it's time to try my hand at modelling? Except I'm not sure I'll be able to output anything decent in 2 weeks... either way, this'll be fun!

hmmm... I have a map nearly finished that is basically a cave with all displacements. Maybe this will encourage me to really spruce it up with more realistic detail.

Sounds like fun. Count me in, and I will get an early start this time. :-D

I have been to quite a few caves, and they are pretty cool (literally too).
