Hey everyone,

I am here because I need to do a lot of learning about mods and level design.

I am currently enrolled in a 3D Game art and Animation program and have a degree in Graphic Design and a diploma in 2D Animation.

Unfortunately, my school does not focus on the other aspect of level design (mechanics, game play, scripting, etc) so here I am hoping to learn and ask some questions! And over time, with more experience also contribute and help others.

My only real exposure to engines so far is the UDK. Mainly the art aspect of it (Lighting, assets).

Eventually, I would like to learn Source as well to make a L4D2 mod, but, baby steps :P

Welcome to Interlopers, I hope you enjoy your stay and learn while your here.

I bet lighting and asset importing is far better in the UDK... Source is kinda out of date in comparison. Though for some reason we still mod it... anyways... have fun.
Have a question related to modding or something I posted? Something that needs staff attention? I haven't been active lately, but feel free to PM me or message me on Steam(link below)

the single most important thing you can remember in level design is that above all else...no matter what the beauty of a level...no matter how complex the animations or models...

a game must be FUN to be successful.

Here are a few introductory pages on level design from Valve's Developer Community:

Single Player Mapping http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Single-Player_Mapping_Tips
Bounce (level design term) http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Bounce_%28level_design%29
Loop (level design term) http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Loops_%28level_design%29
Push Gameplay http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Push_Gameplay

also heres an article on making multiplayer maps, in case you were interested in that.

How To Develop A Map That Works (multiplayer) http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/How_To_Develop_A_Map_That_Works

Check out this developer: http://www.littlelostpoly.co.uk/devblog/ mainly because he is extremely proficient as a designer. He began by making some breathtaking multiplayer maps, which may be a good option for you since you have a degree in Graphic Design and can maximize your current strengths.

Good luck and have fun. This is an excellent community for your type of questions.

Thanks to the both of you :)

Gary: We have just transitioned from the Unreal Tournament 3 Editor to the UDK so learning to import will be very soon as we have just finished modelling, texturing and mapping an object to import.

joe_rogers_11155: Thanks so much for all the links! I am looking through them now, the last one about Robert Briscoe is awesome! His WIPs are great!!
