Hey dudes,

Sorry for the long delay but testing showed that we had a lot of problems regarding framerate due to the refracting textures we used so I've replaced them and fixed up many bugs and we've decided to release B1 to the public. This has been in the works for 8 months and I'm glad it's finished so enjoy!

DE_cistern for CS:GO is set in a water treatment facility and features a lot of custom content made by me. At the moment this is beta so expect some bugs but based on our feedback we'll decide what to do next. Thanks for your understanding!

This has been a collaboration between William T. Nicholls and Richard Acherki.

-----

I also documented my development thoughts in a .pdf called "The Making of Cistern" which can be downloaded here: http://upload.habboi.co.uk/makingofcistern_final.rar

It contains my methods for getting flow maps to work as well as some other things I experimented with. If you could please upload it to other places as I don't want my server to be overloaded. Cheers.

Enjoy!

Yeah I actually enjoyed writing that document up. Probably more so than making the level lol :D

This is really great. An immense improvement on your previous work, of which I was already a fan.

Minor niggles you already know about - some of the spotlights are far too opaque, the water caustics don't make sense when they're supposed to be coming from the fast flowing stream and you could use player clips a bit more generously to prevent players bumping into some extruding geometry.

Overall though, an excellent piece of work. Plays pretty well with bots, although maybe it'd be more catered to demolition mode since bombsite A is almost completely ignored and the relatively small scale of the map makes rounds very quick.

8/10 easily.

Looks quite sexy. Those rails must have been a pain in the ass to make. So...many...rails...

But anyway, one minor aesthetic nitpick I figured I'd mention has to do with the water leaking from pipes. It looks perfectly clear and liquidy, but I think making it more white and foamy would look far better. I don't think water would ever look that clear when spewing from a pipe like that. I actually thought it was a heatwave effect at first until I saw the splash effect beneath it on the surface of the water.

Actually I must confess those pictures are a little outdated. We had problems with the "heatwave water" as you call it causing people to drop in framerate so I had no choice but to replace them with cheaper foamy water. Perhaps the one ingame is more to your description. Personally I liked the refraction more and keep them on my portfolio ;)

I still don't like the rails. The rest looks rather impressive, of course, and I am looking forward to reading the making of. I am planning to do the same for de_investment (should that one ever get finished, ha!) and this will give some great advice of how to do it.

One thing bothers me, though. Those big pipes don't seem to have any supports at all?! I don't think that would work ...

And yeah, refraction is a big performance hit and I don't think it can be used very well in multiplayer maps ...
Perhaps if you limit the use to two or three places in a map and not two refraction maps in the same room, but as your map contains a lot of water, that would likely be impossible.

I thought it looked very beautiful. It was pretty fun to play as well. When I look at maps people on this forum post, especially ones like this, I wonder why the hell we are still playing crap like de_aztec daily.

8.5/10 would play again.

For the record I was referring to the water spewing from the pipes.
