Black Mesa: Opening Level Screenshots

Postby Blink on Tue Aug 31, 2010 8:46 am

Atomic AU have had the pleasure of playing the first few levels of Black Mesa and been nice enough to post 101 screenshots for us to salivate over

Update - The gallery has since been taken down at Black Mesa's request.

Wow.

The combination of attention to original detail, and new material provided by the modern team is impressive. If you've ever tried to go back to Half Life you'll know the old engine really isn't aging well; this, however, makes the game fresh and up to date.

Ohhhh good! A sign that black mesa isn't dead contrary to popular belief. I knew it wasn't dead!

Bugger I missed out on the screenshots but glad it's back in the media spotlight as such :)

Can't wait for this game/mod!

tbh this is really starting to look dated, they need to get their groove on and get this finished.

Young Kleiner looks awesome. All three scientists in the same pants, shirts and ties - not so awesome.

Actually, this is quite nice and I'm looking forward to the final thing. I never really followed them too closely, expecting this to take ages. It's a whole game, after all.

Also, the cup isn't floating, he's juggling.

my thoughts exactly. The gallery doesnt look as awesomach as it did ninety years ago when they started.

Still, id play it, no doubt about it.

Compared to what though? It's a re-make of Half-Life so it's always going to look 100 times better in my eyes.

Left 4 Dead doesn't look nearly as detailed and that's the most recent thing Valve have done on Source.

Its not so much their fault, its the fact that source is getting more and more outdated. There just really isn't much detail at all in those images. The displacement work looks great, but the overall detail just seems lacking. Looking at those screens it reminds me of Deus Ex and soldier of fortune level of detail.

And I would have to disagree, Left 4 Dead 2 looks far more detailed.

EDIT: I can't seem to make my mind up. I think it looks good, then just go "meh" at it. Oh well.

To me, it appears as if they have retained a large amount of the low-poly original Half Life, combined with some, what appears to be, substandard textures. In all seriousness, this doesn't wow me like it did however long I last saw it.

The thing does scream Half Life, and I applaud them for that. Hell, it is nice to see that being relived in a more modern form. But it doesn't seem to be pushing the limits of the source engine. Rather, just adapting some goldsrc into source and equivelant texture and model improvements.

Actually, I am lying. There is a lot more detail in the game than it first appears. BUT, it still has a really strong feel of old style.

I can't seem to articulate this. It looks good, reminiscent of old times, but then pales in comparison to some other recent work by people.

THEN AGAIN: I will definitely play this one through.
