So I've been kicking around with game development again. I'm gonna go on a rant for a minute here.
I recently grabbed up some new software: Blender and Unreal Engine 4. I have started teaching myself some things using the plentiful resources available online. I even bought one of those super-cheap Udemy courses for Blender, which I actually think is worth it.
What a breath of fresh air coming from the Unreal Engine. From the richly rendered viewport and live game testing in the editor, to the programming blueprint system which can do just about ANYTHING...I am blown away by the power and utility of it all. I can't help but keep thinking to myself............
This was supposed to be Valve. This was supposed to be US.
I fear I will drive myself to literal madness in my attempts to comprehend the executive decision-making processes at Valve. How they went from the juggernaut launch of Orange Box to the company they are today leaves me frustrated and heartbroken, to put it extremely mildly. I feel like the obvious answer is "follow the money" but that's never going to satisfy me. Source 2 could have been Unreal Engine 4, and more. And they blew it, big time.
In the meantime, I've been very happy to work quietly on my skills with Blender and Unreal, and I hope to have enough knowledge to produce a small game one day. I don't have any assets or maps to show off because everything has to be made from scratch...and I think that is just fine. I have an empty hole in my heart where my mods used to be, and perhaps I will create a hybridized version of them in Unreal.
It is just a deep shame that Valve has let go of its greatest asset. And after a long stubborn wait of my own, I must let go of Valve. ...And hello, Unreal.
The king is dead. Long live the king!!
