HL1 (er gldsrc) sections

Postby mike-o on Sun Oct 30, 2005 3:11 pm

I really, really think we need a hl1 section at these boards. If that's not possible, could we at least have some hl1 mapping contests? Because, lets face it... mapping for hl1 is about four times more fun than mapping for hl2.

Uh...it is?

This is news to me -- why exactly?

He's obviously got a different opinion on things than most interlopers. Hl1 mapping is fun, but you got a larger variety of stuff to do in hl2. Let him be :D

I'm not against having an HL1 section though, I just don't think it'll get much use.

Well I only know of 2 other people that map for cs 1.6 now, that's grim reaper and this guy. I used to, made 2 maps, couldn't be bothered any more after that so i moved on to source / dystopia.

well, first off, you dont have to run everything through steam. second, you dont have to go through all the crap like writing shaders for custom materials. did you map for hl1?

I think steam makes things easier, and why do you have to write shaders? and yes I did map for HL1 -- as soon as it came out (of course I was a noob then)

dont ask me why you have to write shaders for simple textures, i didnt code the damn engine.

I think he is getting shaders confused with Materials.

Well Mike-o. Simply put if you wanted HL2 to be done with only textures not materials. Then it would be very bording. All textures would react the same, there would be no variation in sounds/gibs/strength/anything really.

HL1 still did the same thing just on a slightly lower scale.

Also they are really quite easy to do. You just need to actually learn them.

i have actually learned them, i think its just a waste of time to make a shader for a generic texture that doesnt react or shine to anything.

anyways thats not the point of this thread

I still think a hl1 section would be nice, it would also be good for hl1 mod discussions.

And I understand how steam can get annoying, steam still running while you are mapping can become extremely annoying. Though HL2 is the new game and there arent that many people making maps for hl1 now. There are still a few people and there is the mods making new maps for their final hl1 version.

Oh, just wanted to throw this out there - if you, BK, don't feel like moderating and dealing with the hl1 contests, I'll do it. I really want to participate, but I'm willing to take one for the team and deal with the hl1 stuff on my own.

I still don't see why you guys can't talk about Hl1 related stuff in the forums that are already there.

Oh and mike-o seriously i'm starting to wonder if you know what a shader is.
