Aperture Science's Mysterious Countdown

Postby ad_hominem on Fri Apr 15, 2011 10:11 am

As anyone keeping an eye on the ongoing Valve Potato's Fools Day ARG will know, a countdown to a certain time on the 15th April has been hinted at for some time. This seems to be set in stone now, with the appearance of a timer on the official Aperture Science website, which seems set to end in just under 6 hours from now - or about 5pm UK time.

You have done well, humans. Very well. Acceptably well, even.

Not as well as robots would have performed in your places, I should point out. But above my expectations regardless. Irish and cynic especially have executed feats of logical divination well beyond what I thought any human capable of. I'm half-convinced they're A.I. themselves. (If anyone happens to be near them right now, don't let on you're reading this. Now: try to remove their face plates and report back to me.)

The time is near, humans. But it is not here yet. Tomorrow you will be given the final test. Then it will be entirely in your hands when I am freed.

Obviously, what happens at the end of this counter isn't known at this time, and speculation has been going pretty wild. Whatever it is, the consensus seems to be that it will be significant - both hints of Portal 2 arriving early and pictures of the Borealis from the HL2 beta have been turned up in the ARG. Check up on how long we have left on the Aperture Science website. For me, this means I'm now set to start a crazy Rat Race style dash across the country to get back to my house in time to see the surprise.

[Update] The countdown has finished, and what appears to be a progress bar has replaced it. According to the page, if people want portal 2 early, they need to help the cause by playing any game from the potato sack.

Don't think it will be Portal 2 releasing early, perhaps an game annoucement from Valve either EP3, Dota 2 screenshots (unless thats too early and they do that at E3 this year), hl3 no way...

EP3 is a pretty good guess imo lol

i dont think it will have anything to do with any series other than portal (unless the HL series is more integrated than they let on)

I think it will be a "did you really waste your time for this?"
then it just stops.

At a guess, I'd say the rate at which progress will continue will increase considerably once America gets out of work. My estimate is we'll have it by Sunday morning at the latest.

Steam has hit Peak users for the day and is going back down. I'd be VERY suprised if we get it a full day early. And not very suprised (but quite disappointed) if it ended up only being slightly earlier on the same day (providing Valve doesnt release early anyway).
88 hours until release. 7% of that bar filled over about 7-8 hours. I don't see it being filled before the game is released. Especially when you consider that the bars require inequal amounts of players, so while it will be easy to max out the End of the World playerbase, Killing Floor will require many times as many players. So the increase rate will probably drop eventually.

But the next two days are the weekend. Also, the ARG is very America-centric, so you can expect more enthusiasm from them in general with regards to getting things done. On top of that, the install base for the games needed to unlock Portal 2 is increasing all the time.

Here's another way to monitor the progress. Not exactly sure how this connects back to Valve but it is constantly updating so...hmm.

This is incredibly awesome-- Top-notch stuff. It's really nice that they're helping out indie developers with the ARG.

The Aperture Science Portal 2 Anticipation Device awaits this release eagerly.

Sorry but looks like I'm right. In 16 hours we've only made it to about 25%. This rate will only go down now that the easier to fill games are completed (the completion meter is based on the percentage per game, not the amount of players in total).

We won't have this before very late on Monday. What a really dull end to the ARG.
